Colorado is known for its natural beauty, and I’ve stumbled upon these hidden gems that are just something else. From the majestic Black Canyon of the Gunnison to the cozy charm of Glenwood Springs, these spots are hidden treasures you shouldn’t miss. 

Forget the popular tourist spots, these destinations like Steamboat Springs, Ouray, Great Sand Dunes National Park, and countless others all have this unique appeal that really shine. 

So, if you’re up for some peace, adventure, and uncovering hidden marvels, these gems in Colorado are the way to go!

1. Ouray

Located in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, Ouray, often referred to as the “Switzerland of America,” captivates visitors with its picturesque charm, Victorian architecture, and natural hot springs. 

My husband and I visited the small town on a long weekend getaway and Ouray’s downtown, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, took our breath away.

The town’s main draw, however, is its rejuvenating hot springs. After a day of skiing, one of the best ways to unwind and relax is by soaking in the Ouray Hot Springs Pool, surrounded by snow, creating a truly magical winter experience.

One of the highlights of our trip was the stunning drive along the Million Dollar Highway, connecting Ouray to the historic mining town of Silverton. This stretch of highway, known for its cliffs and incredible views was unforgettable.

Taking advantage of Ouray’s strategic location, we decided to embark on a day trip to the famous ski destination of Telluride. The drive, filled with panoramic views, set the stage for a memorable time.

Telluride’s world-class slopes, framed by the towering peaks of the Rocky Mountains, offers a perfect backdrop for a day filled with epic runs and lively après-ski. Our long weekend journey to Ouray and Telluride was one of my favorite excursions we went on while living in Colorado!

2. Glenwood Springs

Sitting in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, Glenwood Springs is a small town worth visiting. Our long weekend escape to this adorable town promised a blend of snowy adventures and relaxation.

After a day of skiing, there is nothing like retreating back to the Glenwood Hot Springs, the world’s biggest mineral hot springs pool. The mix of the warm, steaming waters against the chilly winter air was incredible.

We loved our time enjoying the Glenwood Hot Springs. The pools are large for many people to enjoy the waters without feeling crowded. Plus, the amenities at the hot springs are top-notch.

Besides the hot springs, it has an adorable historic downtown, adorned with holiday lights, offering a delightful atmosphere for leisurely strolls during the winter months. 

Plus, the town is bursting with delicious restaurants, bars, and breweries to try. From cozy mountain bistros to elegant restaurants, each venue we visited was phenomenal.

I highly recommend making your way to the Glenwood Canyon Brewpub for tasty pints of cold beer and delicious bar foods. The location of Glenwood Springs is truly remarkable, offering a hidden gem experience just a short drive away from Aspen and its ski slopes.

3. Great Sand Dunes National Park

Venturing into the heart of southern Colorado, there is nothing like an escape to the mesmerizing landscape of Great Sand Dunes National Park. Against the backdrop of mountain peaks, there is something surreal about exploring the tallest sand dunes in North America.

Great Sand Dunes National Park is often overshadowed by the renowned Rocky Mountain National Park, but it’s one of the best hidden gems in Colorado that shouldn’t be underestimated.

It ranks among the most intriguing and breathtaking parks in the United States. While it attracts many visitors in the summer, choosing to explore it in winter is an excellent decision too if you seek a quieter experience, away from the crowds, allowing you to truly appreciate its beauty without the usual tourist hustle and bustle.

4. Steamboat Springs

Nestled in the Yampa Valley of Colorado, a getaway to the adorable town of Steamboat Springs is unforgettable.

Known for its legendary Champagne Powder® snow and Western hospitality, Steamboat promises a weekend filled with adventures, scenic landscapes, and the warmth of a vibrant mountain community.

We have visited Steamboat Springs on multiple occasions during different winter seasons and our base for the week is typically an AirBnb or hotel situated right in downtown.

We highly recommend staying near Main Street so you can walk to the many adorable shops, restaurants, cafes, and bars. The reason we absolutely love visiting Steamboat Springs is largely because of its fabulous Champagne Powder®.

This special snow makes carving through the snow surreal. The expansive ski area, with its varied terrain, catered to both seasoned skiers and experts, is out of this world.

After a day on the slopes or hiking, we love visiting the Strawberry Park Hot Springs. Surrounded by trees, the hot springs provides a tranquil retreat, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and rejuvenation as you soak in the warm waters.

Spending a week or weekend in Steamboat Springs is always a magical adventure filled with many things to do.

5. Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a stunning park to visit year-round. The Painted Wall, especially during a winter sunset, takes on these soft, beautiful colors. The vibe here is something else and it’s one of the most underrated natural landscapes in the state.

6. Zapata Falls

Tucked away in the scenic Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Zapata Falls is a hidden gem for nature lovers. The short hike leading to the falls might be brisk, but the reward is incredible.

The hike to the falls is less than 1 mile out-and-back making it a quick journey if you want to catch some incredible views of a stunning waterfall hidden in Colorado. 

A As two people who love hiking in Colorado and appreciating the views of gorgeous waterfalls, we can attest to how incredible Zapata Falls is. Be sure to add this to your Colorado bucket list if you want to experience the outdoors and some incredible scenery.

7. UFO Watchtower

For a quirky and unique adventure, head to the UFO Watchtower in Hooper. This offbeat destination is a favorite among those who believe in extraterrestrial encounters. With panoramic views of the San Luis Valley, it’s the perfect spot to take in the stars and think about life beyond the Earth.

If you don’t believe in aliens or UFOs, no worries. This is still one of the best hidden gems in Colorado worth visiting due to its intriguing stories and beautiful views of the night sky.

8. Skyline Drive

Skyline Drive in Cañon City is a scenic road carved into the side of a ridge, offering jaw-dropping views of the city and surrounding landscapes. Take a leisurely drive and soak in the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. It’s a lesser-known gem that promises a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle.

Sam and I absolutely adore a scenic drive and Skyline Drive is one of the best in the state, making it a must-see hidden gem in Colorado.

9. Nederland

Nederland is a charming mountain town nestled in the Rockies. You can explore the eclectic shops, enjoy local cuisine, and visit the famous Carousel of Happiness. 

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or an art lover, Nederland has something for everyone, including some of the best backpacking in Colorado.

10. Wheeler Geologic Area

Venture into the rugged San Juan Mountains to discover Wheeler Geologic Area, a surreal landscape of volcanic ash formations. This hidden wonder is a photographer’s dream, situated in Southern Colorado. It’s a fantastic place to visit for amazing views of unique volcanic formations. 

11. Paint Mines Interpretive Park

Unleash your inner explorer at Paint Mines Interpretive Park, where vibrant clay and rock formations paint the landscape. Wander through this geological wonderland, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a living canvas of colors and shapes.

12. Ice Lake Basin

High up in the San Juan Mountains, Ice Lake Basin awaits hikers with its breathtaking alpine scenery. The hike to Ice Lake Basin is 8.3 miles out-and-back and it’s considered to be a hard hike. 

The trek may be challenging, but the payoff is extraordinary due to the beautiful turquoise lakes surrounded by tall peaks, creating a postcard-worthy setting that’s worth the effort.

13. A Ghost Town

Colorado boasts several ghost towns frozen in time, each with its own tales. St. Elmo is one of Colorado’s best-preserved ghost towns. Established in the 1880s, it was a bustling mining town with a vibrant community. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved buildings, including a general store and the town hall.

Another popular ghost town is located in the San Juan Mountains, Animas Forks was a silver and gold mining town in the late 19th century. The harsh winters and economic decline led to its abandonment, but the ghost town remains remarkably intact, offering a glimpse into the past.

15. Helen Hunt Falls

Named after the famous poet and activist, Helen Hunt Falls near Colorado Springs is a hidden oasis. The short hike to the falls provides a refreshing escape, and the cascading waters surrounded by lush greenery create a lovely atmosphere for relaxation and reflection.

The hike is only .1 mile out-and-back, which makes it very convenient if you want something quick to see and experience. Helen Hunt Falls is one of the best hidden gems in Colorado for nature enthusiasts due to its incredible views and unbelievable ambiance.

16. Ute Valley Park

For a nature retreat within city limits, Ute Valley Park in Colorado Springs is a local favorite. Hike or bike through the picturesque trails, and you’ll find yourself immersed in the beauty of towering rock formations and scenic vistas.

17. Colorado Rapids and Colorado Springs Switchback FC

Catch the Colorado Rapids or the Colorado Springs Switchback FC in action for an exciting and energetic experience. 

The passionate fan base and the lively atmosphere make these matches a hidden delight for sports lovers. Soccer teams often don’t receive the same attention as other professional sports such as football, baseball, hockey, and basketball in the state. 

Having personally attended live events for all these sports in Colorado, we can attest to the exceptional atmosphere that accompanies a soccer game. If you’re seeking an entertaining experience, don’t underestimate the thrill of a live soccer match in the state. It’s an experience worth having.

18. Colorado National Monument

A lesser-known gem, the Colorado National Monument showcases red rock canyons and stunning desert landscapes. Drive or hike through the park to witness the breathtaking views and unique geological formations that make this hidden treasure a must-visit.

We spent time camping at the Colorado National Monument on our way to Moab and it was one of our favorite experiences while living in Colorado. It’s unlike any scenery that you’ll see surrounding Denver and it’s worth the drive to take in the beauty of the distinct rock formations.

19. Mesa Verde National Park

Dive into the rich history at Mesa Verde National Park. Explore ancient cliff dwellings perched on canyon walls, offering a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the indigenous people who called this area home.

20. Molly Brown House

Visit the Molly Brown House in Denver to step into the life of the “Unsinkable” Molly Brown, a Titanic survivor and prominent socialite. The beautifully preserved Victorian home provides a glimpse into Denver’s history and the spirit of its former resident.

Have you heard about Crystal Mill? It’s this incredible spot sitting in the Colorado mountains. You can reach it with a scenic drive or a bit of a hike, and trust me, it’s totally worth it. 

The historic mill against the breathtaking mountain backdrop is like something from a movie. It’s a hidden gem for sure, and if you’re into capturing beautiful photos this is the place to be for some memorable shots.

Morrison Natural History Museum is a must-visit. It’s not your average museum, it’s a journey through time with cool exhibits and real dinosaur fossils. It’s super family-friendly, and you’ll leave feeling like you’ve had an exciting and knowledgeable time.

26. River North Art District (RiNo)

Art lovers, you’ve got to check out River North Art District (RiNo) in Denver. It’s this lively neighborhood bursting with creativity. Imagine walls covered in graffiti, quirky galleries, and trendy shops. RiNo’s like the artsy heart of Denver, and it’s the perfect mix of chill and eclectic.

During our time living in Denver, we loved venturing to the RiNo District for a date night and to appreciate the lively art scene and fantastic breweries in the area. Don’t hesitate to make your way there to take in the ambiance and snap a few stunning photos of the area.

27. Seoul ManDoo

Seoul ManDoo is this cool spot hidden away. They serve up the most delicious Korean dumplings in the city of Denver. It’s a flavor explosion you don’t want to miss. Whether you’re a food adventurer or just craving something unique, Seoul ManDoo is where it’s at for some seriously tasty dumplings.

28. Lady Jane

Nestled in the heart of Denver, Lady Jane is a one-of-a-kind cocktail bar that exudes a cozy and intimate charm. This hidden gem packs a big punch when it comes to offering a unique drink experience. 

Sam and I went around Valentine’s Day and got to experience some delicious holiday inspired cocktails that we still rave about to this day.

29. Pikes Peak Trolley Museum

Pikes Peak Trolley Museum is a blast from the past with vintage trolleys that used to cruise around Colorado Springs. If you are into history, this is a cool spot to come.

30. The Maroon Bells

The Maroon Bells are like the postcard-perfect view of Colorado. Whether you’re hiking or just chilling, these twin peaks surrounded by nature’s beauty are absolutely stunning. It’s the kind of place that just makes you want to sit back, relax, and soak it all in. 

They are truly gorgeous to see during the spring, summer, and fall seasons, and their beauty is equally striking in winter when they are draped in a layer of snow.

31. Hanging Lake

Have you ever been to Hanging Lake in Glenwood Canyon? It’s a bit of a hike, but the turquoise waters, waterfalls, and lush greenery make it a hidden paradise. 

It takes 3.1 miles out-and-back and is considered to be moderately challenging but well worth it for some epic views and time outside.
