11 Vacation Spots To Visit In North Carolina This Summer

The coast of North Carolina is where sunny beaches, history, and nature come together for fantastic summer vacations. Whether you want a relaxing break or exciting outdoor fun, North Carolina’s vacation spots have it all. 

From charming towns with a rich maritime past to beautiful beaches full of wildlife, each place offers a unique experience. 

Having spent my childhood vacationing in North and South Carolina, I eventually settled in coastal North Carolina with my family as an adult. This experience has given me insight into the most fantastic vacation spots along the coast, where every day offers opportunities to enjoy the beach, nature, and Southern hospitality.

Morehead City

Morehead City sits along the Crystal Coast, offering a charming blend of coastal beauty and vibrant activities. Visitors can explore the waterfront area with its marinas and seafood restaurants, perfect for indulging in fresh catches of the day. 

The city’s historical sites, such as the North Carolina Maritime Museum, provide a glimpse into the region’s maritime heritage. Anglers can enjoy fishing charters and some of the best surf fishing in the state. 

I personally love Morehead City for its charming downtown area near the water, filled with restaurants, bars, breweries, and shops. A visit to Morehead wouldn’t be complete without indulging in a shrimp burger from El’s Drive-In.

Emerald Isle

Known for its incredible white-sand beaches and family-friendly atmosphere, Emerald Isle is a haven for beachgoers and nature lovers. The Emerald Isle Woods Park offers hiking trails and scenic overlooks, while the Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier is a hotspot for fishing and observing coastal wildlife.

Vacationers can unwind on the soft sands of Emerald Isle Beach or embark on kayaking adventures along the Intracoastal Waterway. The town’s beachfront cottages and vacation rentals provide the perfect retreat after a day spent soaking in the sun and cooling off in the ocean.

I’ve visited Emerald Isle countless times for family vacations, and I adore its relaxed vibe, stunning beachfront homes, and beautiful sidewalks, perfect for evening strolls or morning jogs.

Nags Head

Nags Head invites vacationers with iconic sand dunes, historic sites, and recreational opportunities. Jockey’s Ridge State Park is the perfect setting for hang gliding, kite flying, and sunset views. 

The town’s history is seen in sites like the Bodie Island Lighthouse and the Wright Brothers National Memorial, which celebrates the birthplace of aviation. Beach lovers can enjoy the sun at Nags Head Beach or explore the area’s renowned fishing spots and water sports.

I have visited Nags Head many times, and I’m always overwhelmed by its natural beauty. It’s the perfect place for a relaxed summer vacation by the ocean. 

New Bern

Rich in colonial history and Southern charm, New Bern invites visitors to explore its scenic streets lined with historic homes and waterfront views. 

The Tryon Palace, a beautifully restored 18th-century governor’s mansion, offers guided tours and lush gardens, providing a glimpse into North Carolina’s past. 

Downtown is one of my favorite spots. It features quaint shops, art galleries, and eateries showcasing local cuisine. Outdoor activities include kayaking on the Trent and Neuse Rivers or enjoying a picnic at scenic Union Point Park.

Cape Lookout National Seashore

Cape Lookout National Seashore is a beautiful coastal haven known for its untouched beaches, wild horses, and lush forests. This remote retreat can be reached by ferry or private boat, making it perfect for beach activities, wildlife watching, and peaceful camping under the stars. 

The iconic Cape Lookout Lighthouse provides breathtaking views of the islands and the Atlantic Ocean. At the same time, visiting historic Portsmouth Village adds a touch of history to this natural paradise.

Duck

Duck, nestled in the northern Outer Banks, has a relaxed coastal charm with luxurious amenities. The town’s boardwalks and parks near the sound offer picturesque settings for leisurely walks and picnics with views of Currituck Sound. 

Duck Town Park and Boardwalk provide stunning water panoramas, and the Duck Trail is great for biking and birdwatching. The charming Duck Waterfront Shops offers boutique shops, art galleries, and waterfront dining spots.

Ocracoke

The only way to get to Ocracoke Island is by hopping on a ferry or private boat. This island is like a hidden gem boasting pristine beaches, maritime forests, and a rich maritime history. The Ocracoke Village features historic sites like the Ocracoke Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse still in use in the state of North Carolina. 

Beachgoers can relax on the secluded shores of Ocracoke Beach or embark on fishing charters to reel in fresh catches from the surrounding waters. The island’s quaint shops, seafood eateries, and lively waterfront scene add to its appeal as a coastal escape.

Wilmington

Brimming with Southern charm and coastal appeal, Wilmington offers a blend of historic sites, scenic riverfront views, and cultural attractions. Visitors can explore the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial, stroll along the Riverwalk lined with shops and restaurants, or tour the historic district’s antebellum homes and museums.

Atlantic Beach

Situated on Bogue Banks, Atlantic Beach is a quintessential coastal retreat with sandy beaches, fishing piers, and water sports. The Atlantic Beach Causeway offers scenic views and access to recreational activities like jet skiing, parasailing, and deep-sea fishing charters.

The town’s beachfront hotels, seafood restaurants, and beach shops cater to visitors seeking a relaxing beach getaway. Be sure to check out Idle Hour Biergarten, one of my favorite spots to grab lunch and some cold beer. It’s within walking distance of the beach and the perfect place to escape the heat for a bit.

Wrightsville Beach

Known for its lively beach scene and water sports, Wrightsville Beach is a popular destination for sun-seekers and outdoor enthusiasts. The island’s wide sandy shores are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and beach volleyball, while the crystal-clear waters are ideal for surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking. 

The Johnnie Mercer’s Pier offers fishing opportunities and scenic ocean views, while nearby restaurants and shops provide amenities for a day by the sea. 

Wrightsville Beach’s vibrant nightlife scene, beachfront bars, and live music venues add to its charm as a coastal hotspot.

Oak Island

Oak Island is a peaceful coastal getaway with vast sandy beaches, forests, and a laid-back island atmosphere. You can spend time strolling along the coast, collecting shells, and birdwatching along Oak Island Beach or visit the scenic Oak Island Lighthouse and its surroundings. 

The town’s fishing piers and marinas offer opportunities for fishing and water sports such as boating and kayaking. With its family-friendly vibe, including parks, playgrounds, and waterfront dining spots, Oak Island is the perfect destination for a beach vacation.
