I’ve been to Ohio more times than I can count, and I love exploring different cities and towns throughout the state for their unique attractions, charming parks, lesser-known wineries, and more.

Since I have family in Ohio, I visit the state often and always enjoy finding hidden gems and local spots. If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, I’ve compiled a list of hidden treasures you’ll love.

1. Caesar Creek Lake

Caesar Creek Lake in Ohio, one of the best hidden gems for outdoor experiences.

First on this list is Caesar Creek Lake, located about 50 miles northeast of Cincinnati. It’s a stunning spot perfect for soaking in the breathtaking scenery or enjoying a day on the water. Whether you’re into swimming, fishing, or just relaxing on a boat, this lake has it all. For those who prefer land activities, the area also offers excellent hiking and camping opportunities.

While Caesar Creek Lake is especially popular during the summer for its warm temperatures, it’s also a fantastic fall destination thanks to its vibrant foliage. There’s something magical about taking in the lake’s views surrounded by brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows. It’s a beautiful place to visit in multiple seasons and one of Ohio’s best hidden gems, just a short drive from one of the state’s largest cities.

2. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Ohio's national park just outside of Cleveland.

Did you know Ohio has a national park? Many people don’t, but it’s the perfect spot to enjoy nature and escape the crowds. If you’re a national park enthusiast, you’ll appreciate that this park is more of a hidden gem than big names like Yosemite, Rocky Mountain, or Zion.

Plus, it’s conveniently located just 30 minutes south of Cleveland, making it an easy drive if you’re flying in or coming from the city. This park is ideal for escaping urban life and enjoying outdoor activities like biking and walking. Make sure to keep an eye out for wildlife, too; you might spot beavers, bald eagles, and various birds in the area.

3. Wyandotte Winery

Ohio has many wonderful wineries and vineyards, but one of the best hidden gems is Wyandotte Winery. Located just 20 minutes northeast of Columbus, it’s the perfect spot to savor delicious wines and soak in the atmosphere.

I highly recommend visiting in late summer or fall to relax on their patio. It’s an ideal escape from city life, offering a great ambiance and a chance to unwind with a glass of wine outdoors.

4. Velvet Ice Cream

I’m a big ice cream fan, especially when it’s from a local spot. One of Ohio’s best hidden gems is Velvet Ice Cream. This family-owned business in Utica, just 50 minutes from Columbus, is a true treat.

Velvet Ice Cream offers classic flavors like vanilla, mint chocolate chip, and cookies’ n’ cream, but it also features unique seasonal flavors like pumpkin pie, peppermint stick, and summertime peach.

While you can find their ice cream in many stores across Ohio, I highly recommend visiting the Ye Olde Mill to enjoy it on-site and have lunch at their charming ice cream parlor and restaurant.

5. Short North Arts District

My family stayed in the Short North Arts District on my recent trip to Columbus. While this area might not be a hidden gem to locals, it’s worth exploring for visitors from other parts of Ohio or out of state!

Known for its vibrant art scene, this neighborhood is filled with galleries, trendy spots to eat and drink, unique shops, and a lively nightlife. It’s a hip area in Columbus that offers a little bit of everything, making it a great place to stay if you’re looking for a diverse experience.

6. Hocking Hills State Park

A home near Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio.

Next on the list is the stunning Hocking Hills State Park, located between the towns of Lancaster and Athens. This park is a haven for nature lovers, offering a variety of hiking trails, fishing spots, and breathtaking scenery, including lush greenery, rock formations, caves, and beautiful waterfalls. If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, I highly recommend visiting this park.

As an avid hiker, I suggest exploring the Gorge Overlook Loop via Buckeye Trail. This 6-mile hike leads you to the picturesque Cedar Falls and provides a moderate workout while allowing you to appreciate the park’s natural beauty fully.

7. American Sign Museum

If you’re searching for a quirky and fun destination, look no further than the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati. As the name implies, this is the place to explore all sorts of eye-catching signs that direct us, grab our attention, and more.

The museum is dedicated to showcasing the variety of signs used across America, featuring everything from illuminated signs for ice cream parlors and motels to pizza restaurants and beyond. It’s a fascinating spot that lets you appreciate both vintage designs and modern creativity.

8. West Side Market

While the West Side Market may not be a hidden gem to Cleveland locals, it certainly is for those from outside the area and worth visiting.

As Cleveland’s largest and oldest market, it features both indoor and outdoor sections with a wide variety of vendors offering goods, produce, and much more. It’s an ideal spot to spend a few hours supporting local businesses and exploring the vibrant market scene.

9. Toledo Botanical Garden

Beautiful white flowers and greenery.

While Ohio boasts several beautiful botanical gardens, one of the best hidden gems is the Toledo Botanical Garden. Located in Toledo, near the Michigan state line and the tip of Lake Erie, this garden is truly a gem that often goes unnoticed, meaning you can enjoy a peaceful visit without the crowds found in Ohio’s larger cities.

Beyond its fantastic location, the garden features stunning grounds filled with a diverse array of plants, flowers, and other natural treasures. It’s a wonderful spot to spend a few hours immersed in nature and worth exploring.

10. Jungle Jim’s International Market

Next on the list is Jungle Jim’s International Market. Although there are two locations, I highly recommend the one in Fairfield, Ohio. True to its name, it’s a market like no other. With both locations spanning over 200,000 square feet and offering more than 180,000 products, you could easily spend hours exploring its vast selection of foods, wines, supplements, and more.

The market’s unique blend of extensive product offerings and quirky, amusement park-like atmosphere makes it a must-visit. Just be sure to set aside plenty of time to experience fully everything it has to offer.
